About the Project
Victoria Manganiello is a Brooklyn-based artist and educator specializing in textiles. She is the co-founder of Craftwork Collective, co-organizer of electronic textile camp, and a part-time assistant professor of textiles at The New School/ Parsons and NYU. In 2023, she received a grant to create a book of essays with accompanying artwork, and came to me for help with the design and layout
Fabric Witnesses: Hiddur Mitzvah, Future Artifacts, and Other Speculations'' is a collection of reflections on Jewish textile objects from the perspective of a diverse group of Jewish artists.
The Challenge
Victoria was granted residency at Direct Angle Press to produce a first printing of Fabric Witnesses using their risograph printer. Additionally, she decided to sew fabric swatches into these copies instead of using high-resolution scans to create a tactile connection with the reader. In doing so, we needed to address two main challenges: a) we were permitted to use only three ink colors on the risograph, and b) we needed to create a layout that accommodated various sizes of fabrics that would be sewn into the book post-printing. Both criteria made the design process both enriching and invigorating.
